The Korean HJC brand is working hard and systematically on its own image. The RPHA line is a decisive step towards the top quality shelf, on which Arai, Shoei and Schuberth long ago comfortably sat down. A weapons in the form of the RPHA line prove to be very effective in the race for a quietest motorcycle helmet title – these helmets not only use the benefits of high technology, but are also simply well done, making you like them even more each and every kilometer you ride.
The acronym of RPHA comes from the very American, pathetic “Revolutionary Performance Helmet Advantage”, which I translate freely as “helmet so cool it let others behind”. For an average buyer it is a bold statement, so I’m happy to check whether the manufacturer’s promise is not too far from true.
HJC RPHA 11 is a successor to a very good and popular RPHA 10. The shell was made of five highly resistant materials, arranged in six layers: glass fiber, organic fiber, carbon fiber, glass and carbon fiber hybrids and aramid fiber. Despite the use of extremely resistant to perforation materials, the helmet RPHA 11 can not boast of the Snell certificate, which its predecessor RPHA 10 received. Rarely does the manufacturer add such an accessory. The reason for this generosity is probably the fact that RPHA 11 does not have a sunscreen, but nevertheless I consider it an extraordinary bonus.

Painting is a definite asset to the helmets of the RPHA line. The RPHA 11 helmet was tested both on the road and during many hours spent on the track. In each of these situations I was very pleased with the effectiveness of ventilation. You can see that the designers have done a really good job.
In the front part there are three ventilation inlets, including two symmetrical slotted ones, closed with knobs and one central closed with a slider. In the jaw part there are two symmetrical inlets covered with a metal mesh, and one central one, all closed with a central slider. In the back of the helmet are available outlets – two shielded with a deflector at the top and two smaller at the bottom. After opening all inlets, the air flow is so large that I can comfortably spend the whole day riding the track, even during the heat.
The control of the opening of individual ventilation openings allows simultaneous precise adjustment of the ventilation capacity. On cold or rainy days it is possible to gently unseal the helmet so that it provides the basic air exchange and at the same time prevents the rain from getting inside.
Aerodynamics deserve praise. During many hours spent on the track I did not notice the slightest vibrations, resonance or other features that could in any way affect the use of the helmet. Similarly during further trips – the helmet at every speed showed very good stability and did not get into annoying vibrations.
Despite the extensive ventilation, the helmet turns out to be surprisingly quiet. Compared to the previously used HJC models, for example IS-16, the volume level is very low. HJC RPHA 11 can easily compete with the SHOEI RF1200, which is considered by many motorcyclists as an extremely silent pot.

WIth this model, Shoei focused on minimizing the size of the shell, improving aerodynamics and modifying the visor seal. Users praise the results of the work of engineers, emphasizing the extraordinary comfort during long journeys.
When the first information about the new Shoei model for the 2014 season appeared, we all wondered whether it would be an extension of the offer or whether the new pot will replace one of the current models.
Personally, I bet on the second solution, and I tried to eliminate Qwest, which I liked on average. However, it happened differently, Shoei NXR replaced the very successful model XR-1100, which is a top model from the sports-road segment, in which I traveled over 50,000 km without any major problems. Essential question: will the new model cope with the legend of its predecessor?
WHAT IN THE BOX
When you buy NXR in the package, apart from the helmet sack, we get some useful additions: acoustic caps, nose deflector and chin. Of course, the manual and warranty card. Everything is carefully stuffed in a cardboard box.
A doctorate can be written about the quality of the production of the Japanese manufacturer’s helmets, well, at least that’s what the NXR says could easily be used as an ideal research object for this purpose. Would it be for sure? The first thing that strikes the eye is the quality of painting and graphics. It is really sensational, and the patterns, made in several different shades, give the impression that they were painted by hand. The viewfinder lens and fastening mechanism are very well fitted, and the seal adheres so well that a few hours’ drive in the rain does not cause water to get inside. However, you can attach a bit to the rather clumsy opening of the fast from the “latched” position. In XR-1100 it was smoother and did not require pressure, which in NXR causes the feeling of lifting the helmet. On the other hand, the mechanisms of air inlet regulation work better, which work smoothly and without resistance. However, the best is inside. The padding is soft and pleasant to touch, and the pillows fit the face perfectly. Another advantage is the outer finish of the sponges. Elements that protrude beyond the shell are covered with a leather-like material, so they do not absorb water during rain. It’s a big plus. Unfortunately, the quality of the workmanship is not perfect.
An element that is striking is the rear spoiler, whose task is to reduce turbulence. On the one hand, unlike its predecessor, the NXR has this spoiler attached instead of being formed as a fixed element of the shell. On the other again, it conceals the rear, adjustable air outlet. However, I will not be blaming myself – an idea hit like another parliamentary committee appointed at the request of Macierewicz. Apart from the fact that when hit or fall, these elements usually fall off or break, they are often not very well folded. And NXR, unfortunately, does not differ in this respect from other constructions. Spoiler, although made of a very flexible plastic, probably even a fairly stiff rubber, is fastened … on double-sided adhesive tape. No latch, interference, or something equally effective, and double-sided tape! Effect? After about 2500 km the spoiler started to fall off, and when more dust got into the adhesive tape, it completely released and now I am waiting when I lose it. Honestly, a complete fuck-up for a helmet for that kind of money.
Shoei has accustomed us to the fact that his helmets are synonymous with safety. And NXR is not an exception in this case. The shell is made of a five-layer glass fiber composite called AIM, which is characterized by great strength and flexibility, and at the same time low weight (the tested model weighs 1350 g with a set of accessories). The crust, on the other hand, fills the three-layer EPS with different density. The helmet is also equipped with the new E.Q.R.S safety system, which enables safe removal of side airbags in the event of an accident (their removal makes it easier to take the helmet to the injured). The standard is, of course, the type DD clasp. Naturally, the helmet meets the safety standards that allow it to be sold in the European Union. However, not only such “physical” elements have an impact on the level of security. Not less are here: comfort when using the helmet, ventilation quality, or noise level, which have a direct impact on focus during driving.
NXR was one of the few helmets that – in terms of safety – we were able to check in the battle. The goat during the edition of Speed-Day unequivocally confirmed that the helmet is safe. A few hits – looking at the tracks – took place in the back of the helmet, jaw, visor and both sides. Everything at a speed of about 130 km / h. The element that could not stand was a spoiler (it went off once yesterday).
Assuming a helmet, we feel that it is just perfectly fitted. The cheeks adhere tightly (people with a slightly narrower face can use thicker cheek sponges), nothing squeezes, does not hurt, there is a little space in front of the mouth, and the helmet does not tend to move even when the left / right head shakes. It is important for those who wear glasses that NXR has special channels that allow the glasses to be inserted. NXR, like the XR-1100, has as many as four shell sizes that make it easier to fit the helmet (XXS-S, M, L, XL-XXL). In addition to fitting, we also ensure that even when the interior is going to be arranged and slightly dispersed, it will not loosen enough to make the helmet “fly” on our head (cheaper helmets usually have one shell size “adjustable” in the size of pillows or EPS) . Finally, the clasp – classic DD. Fast, easy-to-use, typical for Shoei helmets – with a strap protected by wide, soft, anti-chafing shoulders. Compared to the XR-1100 NXR, at least on my head, it’s better. The helmet works perfectly on motorcycles, on which we take upright position, but on a sports motorcycle, especially in the “racing” position, we start having a big problem. In the case of a humpbacked overalls (tested on two different models), the “collar” of the helmet hooks and prevents the head from being lifted, and the upper part of the helmet limits the field of vision to the front. Honestly, for a helmet to replace the XR-1100, it’s a complete failure.
Shoei NXR has been equipped with a new type of viewfinder – CWR1, which differs slightly from its predecessor – CW1, with several elements. In the most important aspect, i.e. the angle of view, I did not notice the difference. The field of view up / down and left / right is – in my opinion – the same, however, the mechanism of quick release has changed and the “stops” have been changed to facilitate the installation of the pinlock. The quick release, similarly to the XR-1100, takes place very quickly and efficiently, while it is easier to install a gel insert that prevents evaporation. Due to the internal “rails” the insert does not move and ideally puts on the glass, making the fit is much more comfortable and more reliable. Finally, I will mention only riding during the rain. The new glass does not hold drops of water and dirt, it only carries them away. I do not think this is a matter of the shape of the fast, because this visor was already used in other models, but apparently Shoei factory covers it with a layer of “invisible wiper” or other specifics with similar effect. The field of view is very wide, but only on a touring or naked motorcycle, on a sports motorcycle, when we adopt a folded position, the upper part of the helmet obscures the view to the front.
As I mentioned earlier, the NXR comes with a fully removable padding that can be washed. Removing it takes a few seconds, and re-inserting does not present any problems. The whole mechanism is very simple and is based on several Velcro fasteners and snaps. After reassembling everything looks as if it left the factory. The manufacturer also thought about people wearing glasses and equipped the lining with special channels that allow them to be inserted.
Shoei NXR has been equipped with a set of four air inlets placed in the front of the helmet, ie: jaw, front and two upper side air vents, and six outlet holes in the back of the helmet: two at the bottom and four under the spoiler. The airflow operates on the principle of a sliding flap with three positions: closed, open and half in half. The front inlet, like the rear outlet, operates on the principle of a slider with smooth regulation, where the rear slider supports two inlets placed at the bottom of the spoiler at the same time, the other two are permanently uncovered. The two side inlets operate on the principle of a slider with a lock in the fully open position. All mechanisms work without jams and smoothly, however – for justice to be satisfied – one should mention some irritating detail. The airflow offset does not work over the entire width, just press on one side so that the other remains unscrewed. Everything is ok, when we catch the handle in the middle, but the mechanism is not perfect. And compared to the XR-1100? The vents require a longer habit and initial search (front and rear) of the mechanism responsible for the “unthreading” of the inlet.
Quietness AND AERODYNAMICS
NXR is undoubtedly one of the quieter helmets I used to ride. It consists of several factors, the most important of which are: excellent attenuation (including thanks to earplugs) and sensational aerodynamics. This is probably the first helmet in which riding naked at speeds above 140 km / h did not make me want to set up stopwatches, just like riding a motorcycle with a high window (eg Yamaha Super Tenere 1200) at speeds above 180 km / h. For this no turbulence or turbulence, even when you turn your head.
Ventilation in Shoei NXR is certainly one of its strongest strengths. Each inlet guarantees the air flow felt on the skin, and the jaw inlet works so efficiently that at higher speeds the eyelids turn to the other side. The only thing you can find fault with (and very much for strength) is driving in the field with fully closed glass and chin. With a lot of effort, such as running a tourist enduro in a muddy area, the helmet starts to get hot. So much for ventilation in the upright position (naked, tourism). The case looks a bit different on a sports motorcycle, on which we will take a folded position. Ventilation simply is not so efficient anymore, and the drafts that we felt while driving in the upright position, only a nice memory remains.
In many places I referred to my predecessor, XR-1100. I did it on purpose, because NXR is its immediate successor, or at least it is presented. Is it better? XR-1100 was used by me successfully on tourism, naked and sports motorcycles for over 50,000 km. Shoei NXR is a completely different helmet, and if I was to treat him as the successor of the XR-1100, I would say that Shoei shot himself in the foot. However, looking at the NXR for a strictly road-covered helmet, without sports aspirations, and for use on motorcycles, on which we never accept a penknife position, we get a really great pot, which, apart from one copy, in the form of a spoiler glued on the spit, guarantees good ventilation, comfort, great aerodynamics, and high quality.
Shoei gt air
Shoei GT-Air was presented in 2013. The manufacturer then advertised it as “a new standard of blend integral helmets”. Equipped with solutions proven on the track and those that are needed for tourism, Shoei GT-Air seems to be a perfect helmet. Is it like that? We checked it.
The GT-Air helmet is on the market for the second year and Shoei is constantly updating its painting. The construction of the helmet remains the same. The shell is a combination of AIM material and EPS filling, which is nothing more than a polystyrene granulate. The devil is in AIM, who combines lightness and durability with each other. The extension of this shortcut is Advanced Integrated Matrix. This crust consists of many layers of organic and glass fibers combined with a synthetic resin. The crust is shaped using reinforced fibers. Its main advantage is elasticity, which is to translate into shock absorption during a fall.
In tests of the British organization SHARP, which are considered by many as the determinant of helmet safety, Shoei GT-Air got only three stars out of five possible. The best results were obtained by the head and the upper part of the head. The worst came the right side and this result is surprising, given the fact that the blind mechanism is on the left, and he can make us vulnerable to additional damage. Corrupts come in three sizes.
The helmet is fastened with a microchip, which is easy to use even with gloves on. Unfortunately, the stripes are definitely too short. This makes it possible to fasten the helmet only on the first clove, actually the first two teeth. In the fastener used in the GT-Air helmet they are joined together – this is to improve safety and prevent the accidental opening of the helmet, if we would only attach the microlock to one clove.
The padding is made of polyurethane foams with varying degrees of hardness to ensure high comfort of travel. It can be easily dismantled and washed. The biggest advantage of the interior are the intercom loudspeakers. They could, however, be slightly larger, and sponges – thinner, because music and phone calls sound much more quiet in GT-Air than in the Shark Vision-R Series 2 I tested last year. In addition, the interior was designed so that the helmet could comfortably travel with sunglasses.
The chin and neck part were, according to the manufacturer, “designed with silence in mind”. In fact – the beard and neck area are very well insulated from the wind. Unfortunately, the silence in GT-Air is not experienced, and loud starts to do already when reaching speeds of 100 – 120 km / h and this very silence, or rather its lack are the weakest points of this helmet. For over PLN 2,000 I expected something more. I am not alone in my opinion because I have checked the user’s opinions about this helmet and all complain about excessive noise at travelers’ speeds.
The interior is equipped with the E.Q.R.S. – it allows emergency removal of the pillows in the event of an accident. The stripes are marked in red.
The installation of the intercom ran quite painlessly. A bit of struggle required attaching the covers to the speaker bays, because – as I mentioned – they are a bit too small. There was no problem finding a place to mount the base, regardless of whether I tried to install on the left or on the right side of the helmet. The interior helps you conveniently hide the connection of cables.
Ventilation is another point frequently mentioned by GT-Air users as its weakness. The helmet has two quite large air inlets and one outlet ended with a fancy looking and fulfilling function as a spoiler. According to the scheme, the air that penetrates the jaw canal is distributed in three directions – centrally on the face and sides. The air entering the upper inlet simply flips backwards. Ventilation in GT-Air may not be sensational, but it is also not bad.
The viewfinder on the GT-Air has standard sizes. This is an injection molded CNS-1 viewfinder. In addition, the set includes a pinlock insert that prevents fogging the glass and perfectly fulfills its function. It covers almost the entire surface of the viewfinder and is very well sealed. The viewfinder mechanism works quite reliably and you have to put some strength in raising it. In my opinion, it could be a bit smoother while not losing its soundproofing properties. A major downside of the viewfinder is its susceptibility to scratches. In my case, they were created during cleaning with the use of a cloth supplied with a helmet.
Shoei GT-Air is also equipped with a sunblind. The mechanism of lowering the blends works very smoothly and does not jam along the way. The blora itself is so large that the gap between its end and face does not deconcentrate, but at the same time does not overlap the nose. The distance from the face is also very good. Currently, I drive in medium-sized frames and do not interfere with leaving and lifting the blind. In terms of protection from the sun I have absolutely no comments. The diode 100% fulfills its function and even in the harsh sun I do not have to stop to wipe the tears.
The GT-Air has an additional viewfinder seal that works flawlessly. When driving around the city, you can lift the visor slightly to improve ventilation. Personally, I prefer to just carry him with one clove – the effect is then much better.
Comfort and aerodynamics
The comfort of traveling in GT-Air (except for the volume) in my opinion is simply great. Comfortable lining combined with aerodynamics worthy of sports products make the neck and neck are not tired even after a day of driving. Probably many of you have a few hours after removing the helmet feeling that we are still riding a motorcycle and a delicate “phantom” wave appears (however strange it sounds). I have never experienced anything like this in GT-Air. Regardless of the speed, the head remains stable and you do not have to fight the wind.
Syndrome of repression
My friendship with GT-Air began quite harshly. The first doubts appeared after the attempt to fasten the helmet, because in the upright position I felt a slight pressure. In addition, the size of the viewfinder was smaller than in the case of the previously mentioned Vision-R. The adjustment to the head from the very beginning was very good.
When I compared GT-Air to Vision-R, I did not even notice when Shoei’s helmet tricked me into buying it, and now I drive less and less in Shark. This does not mean that GT-Air is without defects. In my opinion, an anti-fog peephole would be better than a pinlock, it would be better to collect dust under the pinlock. In addition, the glass should be more resistant to scratches. Ventilation shows what it can do, only at higher speeds. The viewfinder has a “city” position, but the difference in performance is so little noticeable that I simply raise it with one clove.
The strongest point of the helmet is aerodynamics, which makes you want to overcome it kilometers. Strengths of the helmet are also the quality of workmanship, exemplary blend function and impressive appearance. In my case the color is perfectly matched to the colors of the motorcycle, which I move in private.

Before we get to the review of this helmet it is worth mentioning that it is a “jaw-jawed” model, and in this type of motorcycle helmets we are currently looking at particularly strong competition (For example, Schuberth) – hence the higher requirements set for the Shoei brand. How does the Neotec helmet compare to others?
Sheoi Neotec – the top of the airwaves?
The Neotec model is a combination of high-quality ventilation with noticeable comfort. Directly located in the model, two air outlets, as well as a functional slider for regulating the air flow, contribute to this. The fact that the manufacturer decided to put it in the back of the helmet makes it in fact significantly relieves the neck. The front of the helmet is also very pleasant to use – just lean it back slightly to allow the visor to evaporate by letting air in to the inside of the helmet. This is a very good solution, but the inlet placed from above turns out to be even better – very wide and large, it moves with an incredible lightness. Even at low speeds, you can feel the air refreshment, which is also thanks to the channels hollowed in this Shoei project.
However, the motorcyclist does not live by the ventilation alone – the motorcycle helmet must also lie on your head well and confidently, without compromising your comfort. That’s how it is in Shoei Neotec, where the padded interior is very nice in contact with the scalp, and the high strength of the material is its additional advantage. A well-shaped shell allowed for a proper fit and enriched comfort, which will surely additionally please every motorcyclist.
As it is a hard hat, one could expect a proper, properly made construction. This is indeed the case – Shoei Neotec provides a high level of soundproofing and excellent tightness, thus, in this respect, it leads to the competition. It is also worth mentioning that even reaching 200 km / h is not terrible in this helmet – Neotec has been prepared for it. Effect? Minimal lateral and frontal resistance, as well as no turbulence.

How many motorcyclists, so many opinions – but it’s hard not to notice that this new project from SHOEI mostly meets with favorable opinions. There are comments on the net that this product is really polished – which is worth recommending. In the face of all these advantages, even a price of PLN 2,500 is easier to digest. Numerous positives are also directed towards the sunblind, in which Shoei Neotec is additionally equipped. High comfort and maximum tranquility are the next properties at which this project collects the greatest applause.

Distance that we had the opportunity to beat in the first test before its return is about 500 km, so as per our standards, where before the test we usually do several thousand kilometers is rather modest. That is why we do not call this material a test, and a driving report. Of course, our copy of Neotec will land with us in the editorial office for the purpose of conducting a full-fledged test, but after years of experience, even a dozen or so hours with a helmet is enough to form an opinion on a new Japanese product.
(Un) safe diaphragm
Both among marketing makers of helmets’ manufacturers and the clients themselves, a battle over the safety of this solution has been going on for years. In order to not bore you with this premise, let us not go deep into the technical solutions that SHOEI praises to improve this security. It is important that finally the blora appeared, and this in the class of tourist dental helmets for me is the absolute basis.
The diaphragm works without any resistance, it does its job perfectly, it goes completely out of sight and does not fall out unexpectedly, even with strong shocks and forces acting on the helmet – in other words, it should be in a premium helmet. The slider to operate the blend is located only slightly intuitively. Of course, this is a matter of getting used to, but it is difficult to catch a specific reference point such as the edge of the helmet.
Neotec has two air inlets and a slider to regulate the flow at the back of the helmet. The front inlet is easy to use, opens up and opens the air mainly to evaporate the viewfinder. Unfortunately, the ventilation of the face itself is very delicate. It’s a matter of taste, not everyone likes to feel a strong breeze on his face. However, if the SHOEI comes with a pinhole with an anti-fog visor that prevents fogging the viewfinder, the reasonableness of the front ventilation directed to the windshield only to evaporate the moisture is a bit debatable. Of course, this is just clinging to details, because this inlet works better than in mid-range helmets.
The upper inlet is phenomenal! The large, wide, sliding element works fabulously lightly, smoothly and is easy to find. The feeling of cooling is already felt at low speeds, and thanks to the channels hollowed in the EPS, the air flows almost to the very end, which is not a marketing clutter at all, but a fact. With the aforementioned slider at the top, we can regulate whether we want the air to flow out earlier or to the end of the helmet. Although the difference is not well perceptible, it does exist.
