What is the waxing treatment and how is it done?

The waxing procedure consists in heating up the wax to obtain its semi-liquid form and then applying it to the skin according to the direction in which the hairs grow. The wax is glued to the hairs and when it sets, it is ripped off, which not only removes the unwanted hairs but also their bulbs, making the hair weaker and less frequent. The waxing method is suitable for places such as arms, armpits, shoulders, legs and groins (bikini area). With waxing, ladies can also remove a small moustache above the upper lip.

Waxing can be performed by both women and men, who usually want to remove unnecessary hair from the back, chest or underarms.

During waxing, the warm wax (but not hot – be careful not to burn yourself!) is spread with a spatula on the skin in the direction of hair growth. Then apply a strip of cloth to the wax and wait for the wax to set. When this happens, the skin is tightened and the material is torn off with a quick, decisive movement in the opposite direction to hair growth. The hairs are thus removed (torn out) together with the bulbs because they stick with the wax to the material.

Waxing can also be carried out without using strips of material. For this purpose, a special type of wax should be used – once it has been applied and has cooled down, the wax panel with the hairs glued to it is quickly torn off.

The safest way to do a waxing procedure is in the beauty salon. The beautician will select, heat up and apply the wax properly, and skilfully tear it off after it has cooled down. Independent use of the waxing method requires a lot of attention and experience – in case of inappropriate rupture of a strip of material or cooled wax, the continuity of the skin can be affected and cause painful damage to the epidermis.

How to do waxing yourself?

Waxing can be done by yourself at home, but you must strictly follow the waxing wax manufacturer’s recommendations. The wax should be heated to the right temperature, then spread it on the skin and wait until it cools down. When this happens, the wax is removed in a rapid motion in the direction opposite to hair growth. The treatment is basically the same as in a beauty salon. Since waxing is quite painful, it is better not to do it yourself – the other person (the best experienced cosmetician) will do better when it is necessary to tear off a piece of frozen wax or a strip of material and do it more efficiently, with a more decisive movement.

In what cases should waxing not be used?

Waxing should not be done if you have dilated capillaries. Varicose veins and leg veins inflammation are contraindications for leg waxing. Waxing procedure should also not be performed in case of purulent inflammation of the skin (this may result in secondary infection), in case of folliculitis, allergy to wax and just after sunbathing or just before exposure to UVA and UVB rays. Waxing will also not have the desired effect if the hairs are too short (they do not stick properly to the wax).

Advantages of waxing

The advantage of waxing is that the effect in the form of smooth, hairless skin is visible immediately afterwards and lasts for quite a long time (usually from 2 to 5 weeks). After waxing, hairs grow back weaker, softer and thinner, which makes their removal less painful and can be done less often. Waxing does not cause redness, burning or itching of the skin. Waxing has a similar effect to peeling: layers of dead epidermis are removed and the skin becomes smoother.

Waxing – how not to make a mistake

Waxing? Yes! Spring is the time when we hide our deep fat sweaters and show more body. Short skirts and shoulder blouses need proper care. We tell you how to quickly and effectively achieve beautiful, healthy and well-groomed skin without unnecessary hair.

Waxing in three steps

Waxing can be applied to all parts of the body, even the most sensitive ones. But in order to achieve the desired effect, several important rules must be followed:

1. clean and degrease the skin before epilation. It is worth to scrub in the day before and refrain from applying any cream or lotion.

2. after epilation, the skin may be irritated. Apply after epilation balm, e.g. with aloe vera, to soothe irritation. In case of severe pain, it is worthwhile to use preparations with lidocaine.

3 Repeat the epilation after about 3-4 weeks or when the hair starts to be visible. In people with light hair the effect usually lasts longer. The key to success is regular hair removal. The effect of a properly performed epilation lasts quite a long time – about 3-4 weeks. However, this depends on the growth rate of the hair.

Contraindications for waxing

If you have dilated capillaries or varicose veins, inflammation of the veins or allergy to wax, give up this form of epilation. The treatment is also contraindicated in case of folliculitis (which often occurs after shaving with a razor), inflammation and skin abscesses. Do not perform epilation also after direct exposure to the sun. After epilation, protect the epilated area from UV radiation. To do this, use sunscreens, necessarily 50+.

Waxing – the most common mistakes

The most serious mistake is to apply the wax without checking the temperature on your wrist, which can lead to painful skin burns. Often the correct application of wax, which does not sufficiently cover the hair, is also a problem. The result of applying too little is that all hairs are not pulled out of the area, which leads to repeated application. As a result, a strong skin irritation may occur. On the other hand, application of too much wax can tear off the epidermis, exposing its living layer, contributing to the formation of discoloration.

It is also worth noting that incompetent detachment of the wax results in the formation of bruises and subcutaneous petechiae. Therefore, it is important to remember to tear the strap horizontally, never vertically, and to tighten the skin firmly enough during its tearing. It is important to do this in one dynamic motion. To avoid petechiae, it is also important to remember the principle that wax must not be applied to the bending area, such as the knee or elbow. It is also important to apply the same amount of wax to the entire epilated area. This will reduce skin irritation. After epilation it is worth remembering about proper skin care. Moisturizing cosmetics are a must. Sometimes it is also worth applying antibacterial agents, especially after intimate epilation.

Body shaving – practised since ancient times?

The first methods of mechanical body shaving appeared already in ancient Egypt and quickly became common in the ancient world. It lasted until the Middle Ages, when the custom of shaving the body was completely stopped. This was due to the development of Christianity and the fact that women at that time were forced to cover their entire body with clothing.

The return to the fashion of epilation took place first in the 18th century thanks to Louis XV who popularized the custom of removing unnecessary hair at his court in France. The smooth body then became a showcase for belonging to the higher social strata. The real boom in epilation fashion returned in 1915 thanks to an advertisement in an American women’s magazine. She moved a young, smiling woman with her hands raised, presenting perfectly shaved armpits. The advertisement referred to the contemporary fashion for summer dresses, which are very scarce, and to the development of new genres of ballroom dancing.

How to prepare the skin for waxing?

The first basic step to prepare for waxing is a peeling that will remove keratinized skin, soften the skin and reveal the hair. Rusłana Tkaczuk mentioned things to be avoided: “A few days before epilation you should give up intensive sunbathing, and you should not use creams with fruit acids. Exfoliation treatments with acids and microdermabrasion should be abandoned in order not to irritate the skin before the treatment”, Thalgo brand expert points out.

How does the preparation of the skin immediately before epilation look like? “Wash your skin thoroughly with shower gel and do not apply any creams or lotions as this makes epilation difficult: the wax does not adhere well to oily skin. When going for a deep bikini haircut, it’s worth putting on airy and breathable cotton underwear, because synthetic fibres can further irritate the skin, which will be slightly reddened and sensitive after the treatment”. Before epilation, it is also important that the skin is healthy, i.e. without pimples, cuts, allergies or fresh scabs. Warm wax will inflame even the smallest wounds, so irritated skin should not be subjected to the epilation treatment.

Waxing at home or at the beauty salon – what to choose?

There are two types of waxing: hot and cold. The first one is usually done in beauty salons, while the second one is in the form of ready-made wax patches and can be done at home. The treatment in a beauty salon is certainly more accurate and safe, so if you care about precision, it is better to choose an epilation with a professional.

Waxing – is it effective and how much is it enough?

“Waxing is one of the more effective methods of removing unwanted hair. Wax removes hairs together with the bulbs, so we can enjoy smooth skin for up to 4 weeks. Systematic waxing weakens hair significantly – it grows more slowly and becomes less visible over time,”. The expert also stresses that the extent to which waxing is sufficient is an individual issue, but it is possible to extend the durability of the treatment with special preparations. There are products that delay hair regrowth, reduce its thickness and length, and also have antiseptic and soothing effects and prevent it from growing in.

Can wax be used to wax out all areas of the body?

“Waxing is the ideal way to get rid of unwanted hairs from all body areas. We select a different type of wax for each batch. Standard strip wax is effective and is recommended for large body parts. It is a fast, timeless procedure. For more delicate areas we use solid wax, i.e. stripless wax. The warm liquid wax is applied directly to the epilated area. The wax sticks to the hair and the hair is removed using the wax itself, which after some time becomes plastic – without using strips. Epilation with solid wax is less painful and allows even small hairs to be removed thoroughly,” explains the expert thoroughly. In conclusion, waxing is both effective and safe for all body parts.

Epilator or wax – which method is more effective?

“As far as the hair removal effect is concerned, it is comparable. The epilator is easy to use, but the treatment takes more time than waxing. Epilators are mainly recommended when removing hair from large parts of the body, such as the legs, because of the pain that accompanies this method of epilation”, explains the expert.
