Laundry, ironing, washing, cooking – taking care of the house requires constant standing. No wonder that many people complain about calf and foot pains. Unfortunately, it is impossible to give up everyday duties. However, you can take advantage of anti-fatigue mats, which will have a positive impact on health and bring relief to your legs. It is also a product that will be perfect for people doing standing work, such as salesmen, receptionists or cashiers. Thanks to the mats, performing duties will become less annoying, and many hours of standing will be less stressful for the legs and movement system. It is also worth mentioning that anti-fatigue mats are designed for washing, so they can be freely used in any place – even in the kitchen.

How to find best anti fatique mats for kitchen? How do anti-fatigue mats work? Their effectiveness is due to their unique design. The mats consist of two layers of rubber. The lower one is an anti-slip, durable nitrile rubber, while the upper one is a special, foamed rubber, which gives it a feeling of softness and creates a cushioning airbag, which has such beneficial for our health anti-fatigue properties. The surface of the mat is covered with a soft polyamide fabric, thanks to which walking on it with bare feet is pleasant like a massage. What is important, anti-slip mats are really durable and resistant to damage, and their even surface prevents tripping.

Thanks to anti-fatigue mats, staying upright for a long time becomes more comfortable and, most importantly, your spine, muscles and joints are not so stressed. The use of anti-fatigue mats also has a positive effect on health. People who use them on a daily basis less often complain about fatigue and injuries, so they can visit a doctor less often.

Best Anti Fatigue Mat for Kitchen Reviews – What You Need To Know?

There are many types of anti-fatigue and anti-slip mats available on the market, which differ in terms of dimensions, construction and type of material, and thus in terms of technical properties and parameters. How to choose the right mat for your needs, also considering the limited budget?

Answers to a few basic questions will allow to narrow down the offer significantly:

Is the mat to be antistatic (ESD)?

Electrostaticity is a big problem, especially in workstations where there is a high risk of damaging electrical components, which is why special ESD mats are used to discharge electrical charges accordingly. More about antistatic mats: Anti-static mats and carpets
For ESD antistatic mats there is a separate category of ESD antistatic mats in which you can choose between floor and table mats. In ESD mats, it is important to choose the right ESD accessories for the removal of electrical charges from the mat and the body.

Will the mat be used in a dry or wet environment?

If the mat comes into contact with water (or oil or other liquids), the structure of the mat must ensure that it is drained from the surface and from the floor. Wet bench mats have drainage holes and usually have a rich pattern to increase slip resistance. Examples of wet bench mats.

If the mat is placed in a dry or slightly damp environment, drainage holes are not required and the surface of the mat can be uniform with a suitable texture to increase friction. Examples of mats for dry locations.

What will be the intensity of use of the mat?

This is not a precise parameter but we should estimate it. In our parameters we have tried to divide the mats into small, medium and heavy traffic and load-bearing areas. This is related to the durability of the mats specified by the manufacturers. It is important to determine whether the mats will be followed only by pedestrians or forklifts, especially heavy forklifts. If so, choose mats with very high durability (resistance to wear).

Will the mats come into contact with oils, greases and chemicals?

The materials used to manufacture the mats have different resistance to oils and chemicals. For example, natural rubber is not recommended for intensive contact with oils and greases. Oil resistance is achieved by adding nitrile (nitrile rubber). Mats containing 100% nitrile or PVC have very good oil and chemical resistance properties. In our technical descriptions we try to clearly indicate which mats are oil-resistant.

Will the mat be used in the food industry?

Food processing, kitchens, catering, bars – these are the places where additional factors are important: resistance of the mat to vegetable and animal fats, good drainage, mat material inhibiting the development of microorganisms, ease of cleaning the mat with water jet. Due to the specificity of these mats we have placed them in a separate category: Mats for food industry, catering and catering.

Is there a risk of fire?

If a mat is exposed to the risk of contact with hot objects, splinters, sparks, e.g. at a welding stand, it must be fire resistant. Fire-resistant (flame-retardant) mats do not spread fire and are resistant to high temperatures. Such mats are tested and certified by independent laboratories.

How slippery will the surface of the mat be?

In case of dry and clean stands there is no problem with slippage. The situation changes dramatically if the mat is wet/wet and especially oily. In the parameters of each mat we have given the degree of slip resistance. If our stand is exposed to oil and grease, we should look for a mat with an anti-slip “Very high” or “Extremely high” level. The most effective anti-slip mats have a surface covered with a rough layer of silicon carbide.

What shape do you want to cover the surface with a mat?

The dimensions of the mats vary greatly, but they can generally be divided according to the shape:
– Standard size – a mat made in the given standard size e.g. 90cm x 150cm is ready to use. Most often it is equipped with edges on four sides.
– Any length – the mat is produced in a roll of a given width (usually about 60cm, 90cm, 120cm) and then cut to the length specified in the order. Please note that the cutting edges are bevelled. The maximum length is the length of the whole roll and is usually up to about 20m.
– Modular mat – the mat consists of separate modules (e.g. in size 90cm x 90cm), which can be easily combined with each other in different shapes. The folded mat can be fitted with overrun edges.

How much comfort is the mat supposed to provide?

The answer that a mat is supposed to provide the greatest possible comfort is unsatisfactory, as it involves costs. A good mat should have sufficient flexibility and at the same time high durability and resistance to abrasion of the top layer. In order to reconcile these parameters, layered mats of appropriate thickness are produced. As a rule, a thicker mat translates into higher comfort, but the price of the mat also increases. Therefore, choosing the right mat should be a compromise between anti-fatigue properties and price and take into account the specifics of use, especially the daily use of the mat by the employee.
In the description of each anti-fatigue mat we try to give the parameter “Fatigue reduction” which will help in the proper selection.

What else should you pay attention to when choosing best anti fatigue kitchen mats?

– Working temperature – if you are going to use a mat at a temperature below 0°C (e.g. in cold stores – frost resistant mats) or above 60°C, you should pay attention to the temperature range specified by the mat manufacturer.
– Frequent torsional movements by the worker – in order to avoid excessive torsional overload of the ankle, a mat with a less aggressive surface and greater flexibility should be chosen.
– Mat colour – if a mat is available in several colours, you can choose from a range of colours, but a mat with a bright edge (usually a yellow stripe), whose edge is clearly visible, reducing the risk of tripping, is recommended.
– Frequent change of place and shape of the positions – it is worth considering buying a modular mat from which you can lay out more arbitrary shapes.
– Slippery floor – there is then a risk that the mat will change its position, e.g. when the body turns dynamically. This applies in particular to lightweight mats of small size. Some mats have a bottom part that increases friction, such as Notrax RedStop™ technology. We refer to this feature as “Increased friction” in the matting parameters.

It might seem that choosing the right anti-fatigue mat is not the most difficult task. This is quite a mistaken belief, because each mat has a number of specific properties that are not always useful in every type of operation. In fact, buying an anti-fatigue mat does not present any difficulties only when the customer has a sufficiently high budget. Then you can buy a model that is not only universal but also sufficiently durable. Otherwise, it is worth narrowing down the criteria in search of a suitable mat.

This can be done by answering some basic questions about anti-fatigue mats, with the order of the questions being arbitrary. The most important question concerns the conditions in the working environment, as these are the conditions that determine the material and technology in which a particular mat is created. If there is a risk of fire in the working environment (e.g. in steel mills or welding shops), then the mat must be made of a material that is not only spark-proof and heat-resistant, but also fire-resistant.

Mats exposed to substances used in the food industry (vinegar, salt, saltpetre or vegetable or animal fats) or the wider automotive or mechanical engineering industry (oils, lubricants, coolants, chemicals) will be made of a similar type of material and have a similar structure. For a dry environment where the risk of flooding the mat with a liquid is low, a different model should be purchased than for a working environment where the substrate is exposed to continuous contact with water or other liquids. This is not only because of the necessary anti-slip properties of the rubber (or rubberised) surface, but also because of the possibility of draining off excess liquids.

Then it is worth taking into account the question of intensity of use. A mat on which someone will work for 8 hours will certainly be less worn than an identical mat on an identical stand which will be used in a two or three shift system. It is clear that the higher the intensity of use, the more durable the mat should be. In addition, other models of mats are used where there is a risk of electric shock or unwanted electrostatic discharge, and others where there is no such risk. Other criteria should also be borne in mind. These are the size of the mat, the fit to the weight of the worker and the possibility of attachment. While size and weight adjustment are obvious, the way the mats are attached to the ground is very often forgotten.

Sometimes they are covered on the underside with a silicone layer preventing slipping, which is particularly useful in the case of slippery floors or sudden twists and turns during work.
