Privacy policy
You can read every story, guide and set of figures on Working Wikily without signing up or telling us who you are. The only personal information we end up with is what you choose to put in an email. This page sets out how that is handled.
Who is responsible
Tobias Hutchins, the editor, runs Working Wikily and decides what happens to any personal information it receives. Questions about this policy go to him at editor@workingwikily.net. There is no office address for post, so email is the only way in.
What we keep
Mail sent to the editor: your message, your name, your email address and anything you attach, whether it is company news, an article offered, a careers question or a note that a page has something wrong.
Nothing beyond that. Working Wikily runs no visitor analytics, has no logins or reader profiles, takes no comments and shows no advertising. Your details are never sold, rented or passed to anyone for marketing. The search box looks through our stories inside your own browser, so what you type into it stays with you.
Why, and on what basis
We use the emails people send so we can reply, follow up a story, consider an article or put a mistake right. The legal ground for this is legitimate interest: someone who writes to an editor expects an answer, and keeping the thread lets us give one.
How long it stays
A conversation by email is kept for up to two years from its most recent message. After that it is deleted, except where a correction, a contribution or another matter raised in it has not yet been settled.
Services that handle it for us
- Google Workspace hosts the editor's inbox (Zapmail set the account up for us), which means every message in and out sits on Google's servers.
- Vercel hosts the website. Its servers note each request they answer, including the IP address and the page fetched, and hold those logs for a short time to keep the service working and safe.
Either company may process this data in the United States. Such transfers rely on the protections that UK data protection law recognises for moving personal data overseas.
Your rights
Whatever we hold about you, you are entitled to a copy of it. You can also have it corrected if it is wrong, deleted, used for less, or not used at all, and you can ask for it in a form you can hand to someone else. Send your request to editor@workingwikily.net; you will hear back within one month.
Should you feel we have mishandled your information, the Information Commissioner's Office in the UK takes complaints: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, telephone 0303 123 1113. Please tell us first if you can, so we have a chance to fix it.
