Pacific Hybreed has closed a $1 million funding round to expand commercial hatchery operations for hybrid oyster and clam seed. The Big Island aquaculture biotechnology company received support from Hawaiʻi Angels and Blue Startups. Its non-GMO seed has demonstrated approximately 30% greater yield and up to 50% lower harvesting costs from more uniform growth. The company is serving more than 20 farm customers and research sites across North America, with demand exceeding current production capacity.

Hybrid Seed For Shellfish Farms

Pacific Hybreed commercializes hybrid breeding for shellfish, applying hybrid vigor, a method used in agriculture, to oysters and clams. Its process builds on traditional selective breeding rather than genetic modification, producing seed tailored to farm conditions.

The company says its seed is designed to help growers improve survival, raise yields, and reduce labor costs without changing their existing operations. Its current work focuses on Pacific oysters, while the company also plans to broaden its breeding programs into clams.

“When we stocked Pacific Hybreed seed while we were growing oysters, we consistently found more uniform growth and very few double set oysters. Growing oysters in Hawaii can be more labor intensive than farming in cooler regions, so the performance and quality of each individual oyster seed is critical,”

Funding Supports Hatchery Expansion

The new capital will fund larger hatchery production, farm-specific breeding programs, and work on additional shellfish species. Pacific Hybreed is targeting shellfish farmers in Hawaiʻi, the West Coast, and other markets as it increases output.

“Closing this round allows us to move from proven field results to scaled commercial production at a critical moment for the industry. Hawaiʻi Angels and Blue Startups represent an incredible base of local support. It's so meaningful to build this company here at home with investors who understand both the opportunity and the impact.”

Seed Level Farm Economics

Shellfish growers can lose part of a crop before harvest because of environmental stressors and inconsistent seed performance. Pacific Hybreed positions more resilient and uniform seed as a way to address that issue before stock reaches the farm.

“Pacific Hybreed is addressing a critical bottleneck in aquaculture. Improving survival and yield at the seed level has a direct impact on farm economics and the resilience of the broader seafood supply chain,”
