Chipotle Targets Apprentice In Every Restaurant
Chipotle Apprentice program aims to place an Apprentice in every company-owned restaurant by the end of 2027.

Chipotle Mexican Grill plans to place an Apprentice in each of its more than 4,200 company-owned restaurants by the end of 2027, expanding a leadership role that currently supports about three-quarters of its locations. The restaurant company expects to open 350 to 370 restaurants in 2026 as it works toward a long-term goal of 7,000 locations across the US and Canada. The Apprentice program is designed to help Crew Members move into General Manager roles while providing added restaurant leadership during busy periods. More than 85% of Chipotle restaurant managers started as Crew Members.
Building Restaurant Leaders
Chipotle’s Apprentice role is a step between Crew Member and General Manager. Apprentices oversee restaurant operations, develop teams and support Chipotle’s operational standards, with responsibility for areas including training and the digital makeline.
The company said the wider rollout is intended to give General Managers more capacity to share responsibilities, improve digital execution and maintain hospitality standards. Chipotle also said restaurants with Apprentices generally achieve better operational scores, which can support restaurant economics over time.
“Every Crew Member we hire has the potential to become a future restaurant leader. Developing leaders from within allows us to create meaningful careers for our people while ensuring every restaurant is led by someone who understands our culture and our commitment to exceptional guest experiences.”
Education Through Guild
The expansion builds on Chipotle’s Cultivate Education program, powered by Guild, which marks its 10th anniversary this year. Nearly 25,000 Chipotle employees have enrolled in an education program through the initiative, and more than 14,000 have completed one.
Among graduates, 57% earned a college degree and 43% earned a certificate. Eligible employees can access online bachelor’s and associate degrees, certificates, boot camps, language learning, high school completion and college preparation programs.
Chipotle pays 100% of tuition for select college degree programs. It also offers up to $5,250 a year for additional educational opportunities or tuition reimbursement, along with one-on-one coaching and college credit for eligible on-the-job training through Guild.
“Ten years ago, Chipotle made an early bet on the potential of its people. Today, employees participating in Cultivate Education are moving into business-critical roles and staying longer. These outcomes are strengthening the company as it expands and supporting the customer experience. Guild is proud to partner with Chipotle as it continues to pioneer employee investments that transform careers and build the leaders its business needs,”
Retention And Career Progression
Employees enrolled in Cultivate Education have a 66% lower average annual turnover rate than non-participating peers, according to Chipotle. Participants are promoted about 1.4 times as often as employees not enrolled in the program.
Supporting Store Expansion
Chipotle’s plan gives job seekers and existing restaurant workers a defined internal route from entry-level work to management and field or regional roles. For the company, the Apprentice target is intended to build the management coverage needed for its planned restaurant growth across the US and Canada.
